Wildu is a lightweight steel “Eco Pod” located in Armagh, a small town west of Clare Valley. Referencing a great eagle in dreamtime stories, the pod aimed to perch softly on the ground and “touch the earth lightly”.

The site belongs to Rebecca Sullivan and Damien Coulthard, a couple who founded Warndu, a company that curates Australian native food experiences. The site has been rehabilitated, as the prior owner used it as a spotted gum plantation.

The pod is built in-situ with (mostly) lightweight materials, carried up to compensate for the sloped site. Stone is sourced from a local quarry to build a central, double sided slow combustion heater. Spotted gum is sourced for cladding and decking from the on-site timber plantation. Corten steel panels break up the grey and age gracefully alongside.

The pod is split into three zones. The initial zone is the outdoor zone, with a cantilever barbeque bench perfect for a Weber and space for outdoor dining. If the weather is good, the second zone (outdoor/indoor) opens up with a sliding glass door and large awning windows. Flooring emulates the decking from outside, and views orient down hill to the damn. A double-sided slow combustion heater seperates the indoor zone, with space for a king bed and luggage storage. A glass walkway enters into a segmented ensuite, with awnings that open up to enjoy a (not quite) outdoor bath, concealed by spotted gum privacy screens.
